Pokemon Unite Launches in China with a Superior Version: A Look at the Differences
In November 2024, Pokemon Unite finally launched in China, but with a twist – it was a completely different version of the game compared to the global release in 2021. Developed by TiMi Studio Group, the Chinese version of Pokemon Unite was essentially a sequel with three additional years of development. This unique version was created to comply with the specific regulations around mobile games in China, resulting in a game that catered specifically to the Chinese mobile market.
The differences between the global and Chinese versions of Pokemon Unite were stark. In the Chinese version, players could explore an in-game lobby, interact with different Pokemon, choose a partner Pokemon to follow them, play mini-games, complete daily quests, and even participate in an auto chess game mode. The gameplay itself was also distinct, with a different scoring system, balanced playable Pokemon, new abilities, and potentially different Pokemon available.
There is speculation within the community about whether the two versions of Pokemon Unite will eventually merge into one, or if the global version will adopt some of the features from the Chinese version. While some features like draft mode have already made their way to the global version, there have also been negative aspects shared, such as more expensive battle passes and convoluted events.
Despite the mixed reception, the Chinese version of Pokemon Unite injected new life into the game and showcased the potential for big updates to revitalize the player base. As the gaming world becomes increasingly global, the existence of two vastly different versions of the same game highlights the unique challenges and opportunities in the industry.
