Filipino American Megan Paragua Makes History with Double Gold Win at World Chess Championships

Filipino American chess prodigy Megan Paragua has made headlines by achieving victory in both the Under-12 Rapid and Blitz Chess categories at the prestigious 2024 World Cadet Rapid and Blitz Championships in Albania. The event, which featured nearly 300 participants, took place in late April and showcased Paragua’s exceptional talent and skill on the chessboard.

Paragua’s remarkable achievement has not only brought pride to the Filipino American community but has also served as an inspiration for young chess players aspiring to reach the pinnacle of the sport. Hailing from a family with a strong chess background, Paragua’s father is a chess trainer, and her uncle is a grandmaster and former world champion.

As a Woman FIDE Master, Paragua competed in the championship held from April 25 to 29 in Durres, Albania, where she emerged victorious in both the Rapid and Blitz Chess categories, securing two gold medals, trophies, and a total of 1,100 euros ($1,185) in prize money. Her outstanding performance has solidified her position as the top player in the world in her age group for both formats of the game.

During a visit to the New York Consulate, Paragua received congratulations from Consul General Senen Mangalile, who commended her accomplishments and offered his support. With her sights set on becoming a National Chess Master and eventually an International Chess Master, Paragua is determined to continue her success in future competitions.

Supported by her dedicated parents, Paragua aims to follow in the footsteps of her uncle, Mark Paragua, who achieved great success in the world of chess at a young age. Mark Paragua, a former world champion and grandmaster, has been a source of inspiration and guidance for his talented niece.

Reflecting on the impact of chess on her life, Paragua shared with ABS-CBN News, “It definitely changed because if I didn’t play chess, I wouldn’t have met any of those people. I probably wouldn’t have gone to that school. I wouldn’t go to those places.” Her passion for the game and dedication to honing her skills have propelled her to new heights in the world of chess.
