15-Year-Old Turkish Prodigy Ediz Gurel Crowned Champion in Bullet Brawl

The Bullet Brawl tournament on Saturday saw the rise of a new champion in the form of 15-year-old Turkish prodigy GM Ediz Gurel. Gurel scored an impressive 265 points to finish ahead of American GMs Andrew Tang and Daniel Naroditsky. The event also crowned WGM Aleksandra Maltsevskaya as the top women’s prize winner and saw FIDE Instructor Moises Ford claim victory in the community event.

The next Bullet Brawl is scheduled for Saturday, August 24, 2024, at noon ET/18:00 CEST. The tournament featured a field of 140 masters, including top players like Nihal Sarin, Matthias Bluebaum, and Eric Hansen. Gurel’s performance in the tournament caught the attention of former world champion Magnus Carlsen, who played blitz games against him earlier in the week.

Gurel’s tactical precision and attacking prowess were on full display as he dominated the competition, including key matchups against podium aspirants like Tang. Despite some losses, Gurel’s uncompromising style and conversion technique set him apart from the rest of the field.

The young Turkish player’s success, along with the promising results of his compatriot Yaqiz Erdogmus, bode well for Turkiye’s national team at the upcoming 2024 FIDE Chess Olympiad. With a mix of youth and experience, Turkiye’s team is poised to make a strong showing at the event.

Overall, the Bullet Brawl tournament showcased the intense competition and skill of top bullet specialists, with Gurel emerging as a rising star in the world of speed chess. Fans can look forward to more exciting action in future editions of the tournament.
