Norway has a new chess prodigy in town, and his name is Aksel Bu Kvaloy. At just 15 years old, Kvaloy has made history by becoming Norway’s new national champion, following in the footsteps of chess legends Simen Agdestein and Magnus Carlsen.
The Norwegian Championship, held in the scenic mountain resort of Gol, saw Kvaloy emerge victorious among a field of 514 players across 17 sections. In the Elite group, which featured six GMs, eight IMs, and four FMs, Kvaloy stood out as the seventh seed and maintained his lead from the start, finishing undefeated with a score of 6.5/9.
In a thrilling final round, Kvaloy edged out GM Frode Urkedal on tiebreak points to clinch the title. IM Tor Fredrik Kaasen secured third place with 5.5 points, making it a remarkable achievement for the young champion.
Kvaloy’s victory at the age of 15 puts him in elite company, alongside Agdestein and Carlsen, who also won the national title at a young age. Reflecting on his historic win, Kvaloy expressed his gratitude and excitement, stating that being mentioned in the same breath as his chess idols is a dream come true.
While this year’s championship may not have featured some of Norway’s top-ranked players, Kvaloy’s performance was nothing short of impressive. His strategic wins and tactical prowess throughout the tournament showcased his potential as a rising star in the chess world.
With two GM norms under his belt and a promising future ahead, Kvaloy is set to continue his chess journey at the Paleochora Open in Greece, where he will have the opportunity to secure his final norm. As he sets his sights on further success, Kvaloy’s dedication and passion for the game are sure to inspire chess enthusiasts around the world.
