Chennai Grand Masters Tournament 2024: Strongest Chess Tournament in India with Top Players and Exciting Prizes

The highly anticipated second edition of the Chennai Grand Masters is set to take place in the city from November 5 to November 11. Last year’s inaugural edition, with an official average rating of 2711 Elo, was hailed as the strongest tournament of classical chess ever held on Indian soil.

In a thrilling finish last year, D. Gukesh emerged victorious over Arjun Erigaisi due to a better tiebreak record. This win propelled Gukesh to gain crucial FIDE circuit points, ultimately leading him to triumph in the FIDE Candidates tournament. Gukesh will now face off against China’s Ding Liren for the World Championship title in Singapore from November 23 to December 15.

This year’s Masters event boasts an impressive lineup with Arjun Erigaisi as the top seed, alongside top players such as Levon Aronian, Maxime Vachier Lagrave, Vidit Gujrathi, and more. The tournament will feature seven rounds of classical chess with an average rating of 2729.

Additionally, a Challengers section has been introduced, offering a chance for up-and-coming Indian talents to showcase their skills. The winner of the Challengers section will earn a spot in next year’s Masters event.

With a total prize money of Rs 50 lakh for the Masters section and Rs 20 lakh for the Challengers, the Chennai Grand Masters promises to be an exciting and competitive event for chess enthusiasts and players alike. Stay tuned for updates and highlights from this prestigious tournament!
