Nepomniachtchi and Abdusattorov Secure Spots in 2026 Chess.com Open Playoffs

In an electrifying showdown on Monday, Grandmasters Ian Nepomniachtchi and Nodirbek Abdusattorov clinched their spots in the highly anticipated 2026 Chess.com Open Playoffs. Nepomniachtchi emerged victorious, winning the tournament outright, while Abdusattorov secured his place by defeating fellow GM Wesley So in a tense match.

The tournament, part of a larger series leading to the prestigious Esports World Cup, saw Nepomniachtchi and Abdusattorov rise to the top, earning the privilege to select their opponents for the opening round of the Playoffs. Nepomniachtchi will face GM Jan-Krzysztof Duda, while Abdusattorov is set to go up against GM Sam Sevian.

The excitement continues as the second GM Play-in is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18, at 12:00 p.m. ET / 18:00 CET / 9:30 p.m. IST.

A Battle of Wits

Nepomniachtchi’s path to victory was marked by strategic brilliance and resilience. He finished the tournament without the need for tiebreaks, drawing against GM Hans Niemann in the penultimate round and sealing his win with a checkmate against GM Nihal Sarin in the final round. “I’m glad to win the event, even with some internet issues,” Nepomniachtchi remarked, reflecting on his performance.

Abdusattorov, who initially held a perfect score after four rounds, faced a nail-biting finish. After drawing in subsequent rounds, he managed to secure his spot by defeating So, who also finished with an impressive seven points. Abdusattorov’s victory came after a dramatic turn of events where his opponent, Maxim Matlakov, disconnected during a winning position, allowing Abdusattorov to capitalize and advance.

The Road Ahead

The Chess.com Open is a monumental online event, spanning over a month and featuring various qualifiers, including preliminaries for untitled players and titled qualifiers for non-GM players. The Play-ins are crucial, as they funnel two players into the Playoffs, which will ultimately feature 16 competitors vying for a share of the $250,000 prize pool and three coveted spots in the 2026 Esports World Cup.

As the tournament progresses, anticipation builds for the next round of Play-ins, where six more players will secure their places in the Playoffs. Fans and players alike are eager to see who will rise to the occasion in this thrilling chess saga.
