Nine-Year-Old English Chess Prodigy Breaks Records, Earns Master Title, and Surpasses 2300 Rating Barrier
Nine-year-old Ethan Pang has made history in the world of chess by becoming the youngest player ever to earn the prestigious title of FIDE Master and break the official 2300 rating barrier. The Westminster Under School pupil achieved a stellar rating of 2303, making him the top player in both the under-nine and under-10 age groups globally.
Surpassing the previous record set by International Master Faustino Oro, Pang achieved this remarkable feat at just nine years and seven months old. While Oro gained the necessary rating points at a younger age, he had to wait for his rating to be published by FIDE, making Pang the official record-holder.
Pang’s rapid rise in the chess world has been nothing short of extraordinary. In July, he became the youngest player to surpass 2200, earning the title of Candidate Master. In September, he defeated three grandmasters at a tournament in Budapest, showcasing his exceptional talent and skill.
His father, Raymond Pang, expressed immense pride in his son’s accomplishments, highlighting Ethan’s hard work and determination. He emphasized the valuable life lessons that chess teaches, such as perseverance and resilience, which will benefit Ethan in all aspects of his life.
Malcolm Pein, the English Chess Federation’s Director of International Chess, commended Ethan for his record-breaking achievements, stating that English chess is on the rise with talented youngsters like Ethan leading the way.
Ethan’s remarkable journey in the world of chess serves as an inspiration to aspiring young players and a testament to the power of dedication and passion in achieving one’s goals.
