Introducing Jeff French: The New Editor of Check is in the Mail

Jeff French, Former Chess Player and Editor, Takes on New Role as Editor

In a surprising turn of events, Jeff French, a seasoned chess player and editor, has been appointed as the new editor for the Check is in the Mail column. What makes this appointment even more intriguing is the fact that Jeff was once a student and chess club member of none other than Alex Dunne in high school in northeast Pennsylvania. Not only did Jeff play over-the-board games with Alex, but he also contributed to the online Chess Life memorial for the late chess legend.

Jeff’s journey in the world of chess spans over 50 years, starting when he was just 11 years old. His career as a chess journalist began in 2014 when he took on the role of Texas Knights editor for the Texas Chess Association. Despite having to resign in 2018 due to professional commitments, Jeff made a comeback in 2022 after retiring from his previous career and trying his hand at mobile application development. He also served as the assistant editor for The Chess Correspondent, the publication of the Correspondence Chess League of America.

After editing another 12 issues for the Texas Knights, Jeff found himself with some extra time on his hands. Following discussions with Michael D. Buss, the US Chess CC Coordinator, Jeff agreed to step into the role of the Check is in the Mail editor.

To kick off his return, Jeff has included games from recent tournaments and some tactics puzzles for readers to enjoy. The games feature exciting matchups and strategic moves, providing a glimpse into the world of competitive chess.

As Jeff takes on this new role, the chess community eagerly anticipates the engaging content he will bring to the Check is in the Mail column. With his wealth of experience and passion for the game, Jeff is sure to make a significant impact as the new editor.

For chess enthusiasts interested in contributing games or puzzles for publication, Jeff welcomes submissions via email. Stay tuned for the next issue of Check is in the Mail, set to be available around December 1st.
