Remembering the Legendary GM Zenon Franco Ocampos: Paraguay’s First Grandmaster

Paraguayan chess legend and first grandmaster Zenon Franco Ocampos has passed away at the age of 68. Franco, who was known for his exceptional skills on the board and his contributions to the chess community as an author and coach, died in a hospital in Vigo, Spain after suffering a heart attack.

Born in Asuncion, Paraguay, Franco’s family moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina due to political repression. Despite the challenges he faced, Franco’s chess career flourished, and he went on to win the national championship in 1976. He represented Paraguay in 10 Olympiads and later played for Spain in 1998.

Franco’s achievements include winning the Pan-American Championship in 1981 and achieving a career-high ranking of 67th on the FIDE rating list in 1982. He also won individual gold medals in the Olympiads in 1982 and 1990.

Known for his sense of humor and love for chess, Franco was a respected coach and mentor to many players, including GM Paco Vallejo. He authored 38 books in seven languages, focusing on the games of chess legends such as Paul Morphy, Emanuel Lasker, and Viswanathan Anand.

In addition to his writing and coaching, Franco was a commentator and columnist, contributing to the chess community in various ways. His impact on the world of chess will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
