Dramatic Day at Chess Candidates 2024: Gukesh Holds Nakamura, Nepomniachtchi vs Caruana Battle Ends in Draw

On a dramatic day at the Chess Candidates tournament, young prodigy Gukesh managed to hold his own against the seasoned veteran Hikaru Nakamura to secure a draw. However, his fate was ultimately sealed on the other board where Ian Nepomniachtchi and Fabiano Caruana engaged in a grueling battle that lasted 109 moves before agreeing to a draw.

The day was filled with plenty of twists and turns. At one point, it seemed like Gukesh might emerge as the victor after a crucial blunder from Caruana gave him a glimmer of hope against Nepomniachtchi. But just as quickly, the momentum shifted again, and Caruana gained the upper hand. In the end, the Nepo vs Caruana game ended in a draw, dashing Gukesh’s hopes of clinching the title.

In other games of the day, Praggnanandhaa secured a victory against Nijat Abasov, while Vidit Gujrathi settled for a draw against Alireza after a brief five-minute encounter. In the women’s section, Vaishali Rameshbabu notched her fifth consecutive win by defeating Kateryna Lagno, while Humpy Koneru emerged victorious against Lei Tingjie.

In a separate event, Tan Zhongyi emerged as the winner in the women’s Candidates tournament, setting up a showdown with compatriot Ju Wenjun in the Women’s World Championship.

Gukesh needed the Nepo-Caruana game to end in a draw to keep his hopes alive. If either player had won, they would have faced Gukesh in a tiebreaker the following day. The young chess prodigy needed a win in his game against Nakamura to become the youngest player ever to compete in the World Chess Championship, where Ding Liren awaits the winner of the current Candidates tournament.

The intense competition and high stakes of the day kept fans on the edge of their seats, showcasing the thrilling and unpredictable nature of the game of chess. Stay tuned for more updates from the Chess Candidates tournament in Toronto.
