Indian Grandmasters Shine in 2024 WR Chess Masters Cup Quarterfinals

Five Indian grandmasters have made it to the Quarterfinals of the 2024 WR Chess Masters Cup, setting the stage for some exciting matchups. The tournament will feature all-Indian clashes between GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM Vidit Gujrathi, as well as GM Viswanathan Anand and GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu. Additionally, GM Raunak Sadhwani, who caused an upset win over GM Parham Maghsoodloo, will now face GM Alireza Firouzja.

The Quarterfinals of the WR Chess Masters Cup are set to begin on October 15 at 5 a.m. ET/11:00 CEST/2:30 p.m. IST.

The road to the Quarterfinals has been a rocky one for the WR Chess project, with several players dropping out of the tournament for various reasons. Despite the challenges, the tournament has continued, and the remaining players are ready to battle it out in London.

The tournament features a unique format, with each day of the four-day event consisting of two classical games. The players have 60 minutes for the first 30 moves, 30 minutes for the next 20 moves, and 30 minutes to finish the game, all without an increment. In case of a tie, an armageddon game will be played, where White gets 15 minutes and the players bid for the lowest time to play with the black pieces.

In the Round of 16, we saw some intense matchups, with players like Arjun, Vidit, Anand, Praggnanandhaa, and others showcasing their skills on the chessboard. The games were filled with drama, upsets, and brilliant moves, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.

As the tournament progresses to the Quarterfinals, chess enthusiasts can expect more thrilling games and intense battles between some of the best players in the world. Stay tuned to the WR Chess YouTube Channel for live commentary and follow the action on the Events Page for the 2024 WR Chess Masters Cup.
