“GM Christopher Yoo Expelled from 2024 U.S. Championship by Saint Louis Chess Club”

The Saint Louis Chess Club has made headlines by expelling GM Christopher Yoo from the 2024 U.S. Championship after round five due to “gross violations” of the event’s Code of Conduct and the US Chess Safe Play Policy. The incident occurred after Yoo’s loss to GM Fabiano Caruana, where he allegedly crumpled his scoresheet, stormed out of the tournament hall, and struck a videographer from behind.

The swift action taken by the Saint Louis Chess Club to address the situation ensures a respectful and safe environment for all participants in the tournament. Yoo’s results from rounds 1-5 will be annulled, and the tournament standings will be adjusted accordingly. Players scheduled to face Yoo in the remaining rounds will receive a bye, granting them an additional rest day.

Despite the controversy, the tournament continues with Caruana no longer leading by a point due to the annulment of his victory over Yoo. Other players, including Awonder Liang, Levon Aronian, and Ray Robson, have managed to score full points in round five. In the Women’s event, Carissa Yip holds a commanding lead with a perfect 5/5 score.

The sixth round of the U.S. Championships is set to start on October 17, with Caruana looking to prove himself again after the annulment of his previous win. Yip’s outstanding performance has put her in a strong position to potentially achieve a perfect score and contend for the Cairns Chess Queens Award.

The tournament promises more excitement and drama as players strive to make their mark in the prestigious event. Stay tuned for more updates on the 2024 U.S. Championship and Women’s Championship.
