Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi Wins WR Chess Masters Title

Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi emerged victorious at the WR Chess Masters tournament in London after a thrilling final match against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France. The young chess prodigy showcased his exceptional skills and strategic prowess throughout the event, ultimately claiming the winner’s prize of 20,000 Euros.

Arjun’s impressive performance in the tournament saw his live Elo rating soar to 2796, bringing him closer to the prestigious 2800 mark. The 21-year-old Grandmaster, who was a key member of the gold-winning Indian team at the Chess Olympiad, is now setting his sights on achieving this milestone at the upcoming European Cup starting on October 20.

In the knockout event, Arjun defeated his friend R Praggnanandhaa in the semifinals before facing off against Vachier-Lagrave in the final. Despite facing stiff resistance from the French Grandmaster, Arjun emerged victorious in the Armageddon game after two draws in Classical chess.

Reflecting on his win, Arjun expressed his happiness at adapting well to the new format and clinching the title. The tournament also saw Arjun triumph over fellow Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi and the youngest participant, nine-year-old Bodhana Sivanandan of England.

In the final showdown, Vachier-Lagrave put up a tough fight but ultimately succumbed to Arjun’s strategic gameplay. The intense match saw both players engage in complex play, with Arjun ultimately emerging victorious after 69 moves.
