R Praggnanandhaa Calls for Robust Financial Backing for Chess, Highlights Importance of Corporate Sponsorship

Young Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa is making waves in the world of chess, recently competing in the FIDE Candidates in Toronto for the first time. However, the 18-year-old is shedding light on the financial challenges faced by chess players, emphasizing the need for robust financial backing to excel in the sport.

Praggnanandhaa highlighted the expensive nature of chess training, mentioning the costs associated with travel and training paraphernalia. He expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the Adani Group, acknowledging the financial strain his family faced before securing sponsorship.

The talented chess player stressed the importance of corporate sponsors in supporting players to participate in top-tier international tournaments. Praggnanandhaa’s elder sister, R Vaishali, also a chess player, finished joint runner-up in the FIDE Women’s Candidates in Toronto, further underscoring the need for financial support in the sport.

In addition to the financial aspect, Praggnanandhaa emphasized the physical fitness required to excel in chess, mentioning his participation in sports like badminton and beach volleyball to stay in shape. He highlighted the grueling nature of chess tournaments, with games lasting 5-6 hours and the mental and physical exhaustion that comes with playing multiple rounds.

Despite not winning the Candidates, Praggnanandhaa viewed the experience as a valuable lesson in handling pressure and learning from mistakes. With a packed calendar ahead, including tournaments like the Rapid and Blitz Poland and the Superbet Romania classical tournament, the young chess prodigy is focused on honing his technical skills and aiming for success in future competitions.

As Praggnanandhaa continues to make rapid strides in the world of chess, his call for financial support sheds light on the challenges faced by players in the sport and the need for corporate backing to nurture talent and facilitate participation in international tournaments.
