Tania Sachdev Urges State Governments to Support Young Players in Different Sports

India chess veteran Tania Sachdev urges state governments to support young players in sports

India chess veteran Tania Sachdev, who recently clinched gold at the 45th Chess Olympiad, has called on state governments to come forward and support players in different sports in order to maintain and develop a pipeline of young talent. Sachdev, along with her teammate Vantika Agrawal, spoke about this issue during a candid discussion at the NDTV World Summit.

Sachdev, who hails from Delhi, highlighted the importance of state governments in nurturing young players and providing them with the necessary resources and opportunities to excel in their respective sports. She emphasized the need for recognition and support from state authorities to inspire the youth to take up sports seriously.

During the discussion, Sachdev also reflected on the historic double gold victory at the Chess Olympiad and the long journey that led to their success. Both the men’s and women’s teams of India emerged victorious at the event, with Sachdev and her teammate D Harika finally achieving their dream of winning gold after years of hard work and dedication.

“It is something that we worked towards not one or two years, but 16 years for me and even longer for her (Harika). Having got the job done, we all felt more emotional than we ever have. It went far beyond winning the gold, it was a lifetime journey for a lot of us,” Sachdev shared.

Agrawal also revealed that the chess team had planned special celebrations to mark their historic achievement once they knew they had both won gold.

Sachdev’s call for support from state governments to nurture young talent in sports is a reminder of the importance of investing in grassroots development and creating a conducive environment for aspiring athletes to thrive. With the right support and encouragement, India can continue to produce world-class players across various sports disciplines.
