Magnus Carlsen to headline Tata Steel Chess India 2021
World No. 1 Norwegian Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen is set to headline the sixth edition of Tata Steel Chess India, scheduled to take place from November 13 to 17. Carlsen, who previously won the tournament in 2019, will be making his second appearance in the prestigious event.
The tournament will also feature a strong Indian contingent, including players like Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa, and Vidit Gujrathi, who recently showcased their talent at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest. Nihal Sarin and S L Narayanan are among the other Indian players who will be competing in the ‘Open’ category.
The event will have both ‘Open’ and women’s categories, with equal prize money for both sections. Indian women players like Koneru Humpy, R Vaishali, and D. Harika will be representing the country in the women’s category.
Chess legend Viswanathan Anand will continue his association with the tournament as its ambassador, expressing his excitement for the event. Tata Steel Chess India vice-president Chanakya Chaudhary also shared his enthusiasm for hosting the tournament, which will see the return of Magnus Carlsen and top global players.
The lineup for this year’s tournament includes top players like Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Wesley So, and Aleksandra Goryachkina. With such a stellar lineup and the presence of world-class players, Tata Steel Chess India promises to be an exciting and competitive event for chess enthusiasts and fans alike.
