World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen to headline Tata Steel Chess India tournament with strong Indian contingent

The sixth edition of the Tata Steel Chess India tournament is set to kick off from November 13 to 17, with world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen as the star attraction. Carlsen, who had previously won the tournament in 2019, will be making his second appearance in the prestigious event.

Following their impressive performance at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest, a strong Indian contingent will also be competing in the tournament. Players like Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa, and Vidit Gujrathi will be among those representing India in the ‘Open’ category, while Nihal Sarin and S L Narayanan will also be in action.

The tournament will feature both ‘Open’ and women’s categories, with equal prize money for both sections. Indian players like Koneru Humpy, R Vaishali, D. Harika, Divya Deshmukh, and Vantika Agrawal will be competing in the women’s category.

Chess legend Viswanathan Anand will continue his association with the tournament as its ambassador, expressing his excitement for the event. “Looking forward to being back at Tata Steel Chess India. It has become the marquee event in India. This year brings the best of the world headed by Magnus Carlsen,” said Anand.

Tata Steel Chess India vice-president Chanakya Chaudhary also expressed his excitement for the tournament, highlighting the return of Carlsen and the participation of top global players alongside the Indian squad.

The lineup for this year’s tournament includes top players like Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Wesley So, Vincent Keymer, Aleksandra Goryachkina, Kateryna Lagno, and more. With a mix of world-class talent and rising stars, the Tata Steel Chess India tournament promises to be a thrilling event for chess enthusiasts worldwide.
