IM Carissa Yip Wins 2024 U.S. Women’s Championship, GM Fabiano Caruana Leads U.S. Championship

IM Carissa Yip has once again proven her dominance in the chess world by clinching the 2024 U.S. Women’s Championship title with a round to spare. The 21-year-old secured her victory with a $35,000 first prize and a $5,000 winner’s bonus, marking her second consecutive championship win and her third in four years.

In a surprising turn of events, Yip claimed the title in a round where she suffered a loss, a feat she also accomplished in the previous year’s championship. Despite facing setbacks, Yip’s determination and skill shone through as she navigated the intense competition in St. Louis.

The penultimate round saw Yip facing off against her Olympiad teammate IM Anna Zatonskih, where experience proved to be the deciding factor in a challenging middlegame. While Yip suffered her second consecutive loss, her lead over the field remained strong, ultimately securing her the championship title.

Meanwhile, the battle for second place in the women’s championship heated up as IM Gulrukhbegim Tokhirjonova and IM Alice Lee fought for a chance to catch up to the leader. With Lee’s victory, the standings shifted, setting the stage for an exciting final round.

In the open championship, GM Fabiano Caruana maintained his lead over GM Awonder Liang by a half-point, positioning himself for another title win. With the final round looming, the competition remains fierce as players vie for top placements.
