Islandwide Schools Chess Championship Showcases Guam’s Youth Talent

The Islandwide Schools Chess Championship held at Micronesia Mall brought together 110 students from various schools across Guam, showcasing the growing interest and skill in chess among the island’s youth.

Students from public, private, charter schools, Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA), and homeschool groups participated in the event, which aimed to foster critical thinking, strategy, creativity, and mental discipline.

Competing in six divisions, including Under 7, Under 9, Under 11, Under 13, Under 15, and Under 17, both boys and girls displayed their talent and dedication in intense matches throughout the day.

The 12 division winners not only earned trophies and medals but also cash prizes and the opportunity to represent Guam at the Asian Schools Chess Championship in Thailand on Dec. 1.

The Guam Chess Federation expressed gratitude to its officers, members, volunteers, and sponsors, including Micronesia Mall and Bank of Guam, for their support in making the tournament a success.

The event also saw individual winners in each division, with students from various schools such as Harvest Christian Academy, Saint Anthony Catholic School, and John F. Kennedy High School showcasing their skills and emerging victorious in their respective categories.

Overall, the Islandwide Schools Chess Championship highlighted the talent and passion for chess among Guam’s youth, setting the stage for future competitions and opportunities for young players to excel in the game.
