World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen showcased his exceptional skills on Thursday at the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid Tournament in Kolkata, securing victories against top players to take the sole lead in the ‘Open’ section. Carlsen’s flawless performance included wins against S L Narayanan, Wesley So, and Arjun Erigaisi, propelling him to the top of the leaderboard with five points out of a possible six.

Former World Rapid champion Nodirbek Abdusattorov is closely trailing Carlsen with 4.5 points, positioning himself as the primary challenger heading into the final day. In the women’s section, Aleksandra Goryachkina dominated with three consecutive victories to secure the sole lead with five points.

Other notable performances include Georgian Grandmaster Nana Dzagnidze closely trailing Goryachkina with four points, and India’s D. Harika, Vantika Agrawal, and Valentina Gunina sharing the third spot with 3.5 points each.

The standings in the ‘Open’ section are as follows: Magnus Carlsen 5; Nodirbek Abdusattorov 4.5; Wesley So 3.5; Daniel Dubov and R. Praggnanandhaa 3; SL Narayanan and Vincent Keymer 2.5; Arjun Erigaisi, Nihal Sarin, and Vidit Gujrathi 2.

In the women’s section, the standings are: Aleksandra Goryachkina 5; Nana Dzagnidze 4; Vantika Agarwal, D Harika, Valentina Gunina 3.5; Kateryna Lagno 3; Divya Deshmukh 2.5; Koneru Humpy, Alexandra Kosteniuk 2; R Vaishali 1.
