World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen once again showcased his dominance in the world of chess at the Tata Steel Chess India tournament, where he secured both the rapid and blitz titles. The Norwegian grandmaster’s exceptional performance left his competitors in awe as he clinched victory in both events.
In the blitz event, Carlsen amassed an impressive 12 points with a round to spare, thanks to a remarkable performance that included a dramatic comeback against Indian prodigy Arjun Erigaisi. This victory marked Carlsen’s second double victory at the tournament, following his success in 2019.
Filipino-American Grandmaster Wesley So also made a strong impression with an impressive comeback, winning six consecutive games and seven of his last eight to claim second place with 11.5 points. Despite facing intense pressure, Carlsen expressed satisfaction with his overall result, stating, “The tournament win is good. The score is not great but very decent, so I’m happy.”
Looking ahead, Carlsen revealed his plans to promote Freestyle Chess with Fabiano Caruana in Singapore and participate in a match against him. “I’m heading to Singapore in a few hours to promote Freestyle Chess with Fabiano Caruana. I’ll be playing a match with Fabi in a few days. It should be fun, and being a tourist at the World Championship for a couple of days will be exciting,” he shared.
The Indian contingent also put up a commendable showing at the tournament, with Erigaisi securing third place, R Praggnanandhaa in fourth, and Vidit Gujrathi in fifth. In the women’s section, three-time Women’s World Blitz champion Kateryna Lagno of Russia emerged victorious, narrowly edging out Valentina Gunina for the top spot. India’s Vantika Agrawal also impressed, sharing third place with Aleksandra Goryachkina.
