Gukesh Dommaraju Defeats Ding Liren in World Chess Championship, Draws Level on Points

At just 18 years old, Indian chess prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju is making waves in the World Chess Championship in Singapore. On Wednesday, he secured his first win against defending champion Ding Liren, leveling the score on points in the intense competition.

In the previous game on Tuesday, Gukesh had drawn with Ding Liren, showcasing his resilience and determination in the face of tough competition. The overall score now stands at 1.5 for Ding and 0.5 for Gukesh, setting the stage for an exciting showdown in the remaining games.

Playing with black pieces, Gukesh made a strong comeback after losing to Liren in the opening game of the tournament. In a post-game press conference, the Chennai-based Grandmaster expressed his satisfaction with the draw and emphasized that there is still a long way to go in the match.

This year’s World Chess Championship is historic, as it is the first time in 138 years that two Asian players are competing against each other for the prestigious title. With a prize fund of $2.5 million on the line, the stakes are high for both players.

Gukesh’s journey to the top of the chess world began at the age of 7, when he started learning the game at Velammal School in Chennai. With the guidance of dedicated coaches and his own unwavering dedication, he quickly rose through the ranks and made a name for himself in the chess community.

In 2022, Gukesh made history by becoming India’s top-ranked chess player, surpassing the legendary Viswanathan Anand. His impressive performance in the Candidates Tournament and his victory over top players solidified his status as one of the rising stars of chess.

As the World Chess Championship continues, all eyes will be on Gukesh as he competes against Ding Liren and aims to make his mark on the international chess scene.
