Magnus Carlsen Rules Out Return to Classical Chess World Championship

The chess world is abuzz with speculation following D. Gukesh’s historic victory over Ding Liren in the 2024 World Chess Championship. With Magnus Carlsen, the world No. 1 and five-time World Champion, choosing to stay away from classical chess, fans are left wondering if he will ever return to reclaim the title he relinquished in 2023.

Carlsen, known for his dominance in the chess world, has made it clear that he has no intention of returning to the “circus” of classical chess. In a review video on his platform Take Take Take, he expressed his discontent with the current world championship format, stating, “I am not part of this circus anymore.”

The Norwegian chess prodigy had opted out of the Candidates Tournament in 2023, citing a lack of motivation for playing classical chess under the existing structure. Despite holding 17 world titles across formats, Carlsen has shifted his focus to rapid and blitz chess, highlighting concerns over the dominance of opening preparation in classical games.

Gukesh, who at 18 became the youngest World Champion in chess history, has expressed a desire to face Carlsen on the board. In a post-event press conference, he acknowledged Carlsen as the best player in the world and expressed his eagerness to test himself against the chess legend.

While Carlsen praised Gukesh’s achievement and acknowledged his talent, he has reiterated his stance on not returning to classical chess under the current format. With Carlsen firmly staying away from the classical chess world championship, the spotlight remains on young talents like Gukesh who are making waves in the chess world.
