FIDE Announces Changes to FIDE Circuit 2025 Regulations to Enhance Competition

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has revealed plans to implement several changes to the FIDE Circuit 2025 Regulations in order to create a more competitive environment for all participants. These changes, based on feedback from the 2024 Circuit, aim to ensure that players are fairly rewarded for their performance in high-quality tournaments.

One of the proposed changes includes adjustments to the number of players eligible for Circuit points in round-robin tournaments. Points will now be awarded to more players in tournaments with larger participant numbers, reflecting the value of longer events and ensuring fair rewards for all competitors.

Additionally, double round-robin super tournaments with at least 6 participants and an average rating of 2700 Elo points will now be eligible for Circuit points. This change recognizes the significance of prestigious super tournaments in the FIDE calendar, which often feature top-level players.

Furthermore, tournaments with two rounds in one day will see a reduction in the total number of Circuit points awarded. This adjustment aims to differentiate between shorter tournaments with a compressed schedule and longer events that require sustained effort from players.

The final version of the FIDE Circuit 2025 Regulations is expected to be approved by the FIDE Council in the coming days and published by December 31, 2024.

The FIDE Circuit serves as one of the paths to qualify for the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026, with the player achieving the highest results in eligible tournaments during 2024 earning a spot in the Candidates. Players are required to participate in a minimum of five eligible tournaments, including at least four with a standard time control, according to the 2024 regulations.

The current FIDE Circuit leaderboard for 2024 features top players such as Fabiano Caruana, Arjun Erigaisi, and Nodirbek Abdusattorov, showcasing the competitive nature of the circuit.
