Indian Chess Player Tania Sachdev Seeks Recognition from Delhi Government
Indian chess player Tania Sachdev, who recently won an Olympic gold, has expressed her disappointment over the lack of recognition from the Delhi government. Despite her numerous achievements in the sport, Sachdev feels that the state has not acknowledged her success.
In a social media post, Sachdev highlighted her achievements in the 2022 and 2024 Chess Olympiads, where she brought home historic medals for the country. However, she noted that there has been no acknowledgment or recognition from the Delhi government for her accomplishments.
Sachdev tagged Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, urging them to support chess players in the state. Atishi responded by inviting Sachdev for a conversation to discuss how the government can better support athletes, including chess players.
Sachdev was part of the team that won the women’s event at the 45th Chess Olympiad, marking a historic moment for Indian chess. While players from other states have received cash prizes and recognition from their respective governments, Sachdev feels that Delhi has not shown the same level of support.
Despite the lack of recognition from the Delhi government, Sachdev’s achievements in chess are noteworthy. She became the eighth Indian to earn the Woman Grandmaster title in 2005 and has since won multiple championships and medals in the sport.
As Sachdev continues to excel in chess and bring pride to the country, it is essential for the government to recognize and support her efforts. Hopefully, the conversation with Atishi will lead to positive changes for chess players in Delhi and pave the way for greater recognition of their achievements.
