Indian Chess Star Tania Sachdev Calls for More Recognition and Support for Chess Players in Delhi

Indian chess has been in the spotlight recently, thanks to Gukesh D’s impressive win at the FIDE World Chess Championships. The young grandmaster’s victory has sparked a surge in interest in the sport across the country, particularly in his hometown of Chennai. However, not all chess players are receiving the same level of recognition and support.

Women’s grandmaster Tania Sachdev, a stalwart of Indian women’s chess for over a decade, has called out the Delhi government for its lack of acknowledgment of chess players from the capital. In a passionate plea on social media, Sachdev highlighted the disparity in treatment between Gukesh in Tamil Nadu and other players in Delhi.

Despite her numerous achievements, including multiple Commonwealth Women’s Chess Championship titles and a historic Chess Olympiad gold medal, Sachdev feels that the Delhi government has not shown the same level of appreciation for her and her fellow chess players. She has urged the ruling party in Delhi to recognize and support the talented athletes representing the city.

Sachdev’s plea has resonated with many in the chess community, who believe that greater recognition and support for players like her are essential for the growth of the sport in India. As the popularity of chess continues to rise in the country, it is crucial that all players receive the respect and support they deserve.
