Magnus Carlsen’s Dress Code Controversy: Viswanathan Anand Reacts

The chess world was left in shock as five-time world chess champion Magnus Carlsen made an unexpected withdrawal from the World Rapid and Blitz Championships in New Delhi. The controversy arose from Carlsen’s refusal to comply with FIDE’s dress code, which prohibits jeans at tournament venues. Despite being a defending champion and a favorite to win, Carlsen was disqualified from the ninth round due to his attire.

FIDE deputy president and former world champion Viswanathan Anand addressed the incident, emphasizing the importance of following the rules. Anand clarified that FIDE’s decision was not personal but strictly procedural, stating that they offered Carlsen several options to comply with the dress code.

Chief Arbiter Alex Holowczak had approached Carlsen after the eighth round, asking him to change into appropriate attire. Despite being fined for the violation, Carlsen refused to change, citing principles. Anand revealed that Carlsen stated it was a matter of principle for him, leading to the arbiter enforcing the rules.

The incident has sparked speculation about tensions between Carlsen and FIDE, given Carlsen’s past criticisms of the chess body. However, Anand dismissed these suggestions, focusing on the fact that Carlsen refused to follow the rules.

With Carlsen’s withdrawal, the tournament has lost its biggest attraction. However, as the chess world processes this surprising development, attention now turns to the remaining rounds in rapid chess before the blitz leg begins. The chess community eagerly awaits to see how the tournament unfolds without the presence of the reigning champion.
