Major Landslip at Gobowen Railway Line Disrupts Travel Between Wrexham and Shrewsbury

The rail line at Gobowen, travelling in the Wrexham to Shrewsbury direction, was hit by a major landslip on Saturday evening, causing disruptions for passengers. The landslip, triggered by recent bad weather, led to the closure of the route in that direction, with further closures in both directions to allow Network Rail teams to work ‘day and night’ to repair the damage.

Teams have been working tirelessly to clear the landslip, which was equivalent to the weight of a Boeing 757. Despite initial hopes of reopening the route on Tuesday morning, more inspections are needed to ensure the embankment is stable before passengers can resume their journeys.

Passengers looking to get to Gobowen, Chirk, Ruabon, or Wrexham General stations will still need to use a bus replacement service for the time being. Network Rail and Transport for Wales have confirmed the closure and ongoing repair efforts, urging passengers to plan their journeys accordingly.

The landslip serves as a reminder of the impact of extreme weather conditions on transportation infrastructure and the dedication of railway teams to ensure passenger safety and service reliability.
