The All India Chess Federation (AICF) recently hosted a grand felicitation ceremony in New Delhi to celebrate the remarkable achievements of Indian chess grandmasters, with a special focus on teenage Grandmaster D Gukesh. Gukesh made history by becoming the youngest-ever undisputed World Chess Champion, a feat that earned him a cash prize of Rs 1 crore.

At the ceremony, Gukesh’s parents were present to share in the proud moment with the chess community. The AICF also awarded Rs 50 lakh to his support team, recognizing their crucial role in his success. Grandmaster Koneru Humpy, who secured her second World Rapid Chess Championship, was also honored with a cash prize of Rs 50 lakh, while Vaishali Rameshbabu, who clinched bronze in the World Blitz Chess Championship, received Rs 20 lakh.

AICF President Nitin Narang commended Gukesh for his determination and perseverance, highlighting his refusal to settle for draws and his relentless pursuit of victory. Gukesh, in turn, reflected on the outstanding year for Indian chess in 2024 and expressed optimism for even greater achievements in the future.

Humpy, who has been a stalwart in Indian chess for over three decades, expressed gratitude for the recognition and emphasized the talent and potential in sports beyond cricket in India. With a total of Rs 2.2 crore in cash rewards announced by the AICF, both Gukesh and Humpy are gearing up for a successful 2025, with Gukesh set to participate in the prestigious Tata Steel Chess Tournament in the Netherlands.

The ceremony not only celebrated the individual accomplishments of these grandmasters but also highlighted the growing prominence of chess in India and the immense talent waiting to make its mark on the international stage. With continued support and recognition, Indian chess is poised for even greater success in the years to come.
