D Gukesh: The Rising Star of Indian Chess
World Chess Champion D Gukesh has become the talk of the town in India after his recent victory in Singapore. The 18-year-old has been basking in the limelight, attending felicitation ceremonies, taking selfies with Bollywood stars, and even starring in a viral advertisement with former world chess champion Viswanathan Anand.
After his World Championship win last year, Gukesh decided to make his competitive return at the Tata Steel Chess Masters in the Netherlands. He started off strong with a win against Dutch grandmaster Anish Giri and a draw against Slovenia’s Vladimir Fedoseev.
During the Tata Steel Masters, Gukesh shared insights into his viral advertisement with Anand, where the chess legend humorously asked for his help to connect with Gen Z kids. Gukesh mentioned that working with Anand made the experience much more enjoyable and fun.
In the ad, Gukesh and Anand shared a light-hearted moment where they joked about Anand learning Michael Jackson’s dance steps. Gukesh recalled how they had to redo the step multiple times because they couldn’t stop laughing.
