Motorists puzzled by stone chessboard installed in Nottingham parking lot

The installation of a stone chessboard in a parking lot in Sherwood, Nottingham has left motorists and local residents scratching their heads. The chessboard, along with concrete seating, was part of a £17 million upgrade to car parks in Nottingham and Derby, aimed at creating E-Mobility Hubs with EV charging stations and bike racks.

However, the addition of the chessboard has been met with criticism, with many calling it a waste of money and a poor use of space. One resident, Philip Towell, expressed his disappointment, noting that the board was wobbly and appeared to be a rushed council plan to repurpose unused materials.

Others have questioned the practicality of playing chess in a noisy parking lot, especially in the cold English weather. Some have even taken to social media to voice their frustration, with one user calling it a “monstrosity” and questioning the logic behind the installation.

Despite the backlash, Nottingham City Council has defended the chessboard, stating that it can also be used as a general seating area for people to relax and have a cup of tea. They have indicated that the project is experimental and will be evaluated based on public feedback.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether the stone chessboard will become a popular attraction or if it will be removed due to lack of use.
