Uzbekistan Grandmaster Nodirbek Yakubboev Explains Refusal to Shake Hands in Tata Steel Chess Tournament

Uzbekistan grandmaster Nodirbek Yakubboev has sparked controversy in the ongoing Tata Steel chess tournament by refusing to shake hands with Vaishali Rameshbabu, citing religious beliefs as the reason behind his action. Currently, Yakubboev is the joint leader of the tournament alongside world champion D Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa.

In a statement, Yakubboev explained, “I do not touch other women for religious reasons.” He expressed his respect for Vaishali and her brother, acknowledging them as the strongest chess players in India. However, he apologized if his behavior had offended her.

Yakubboev further clarified his stance, stating that while he believes chess is not forbidden in his religion, he personally chooses not to shake hands with women. He emphasized that he does not impose his beliefs on others and respects their choices.

The grandmaster also mentioned a previous incident with another player in 2023 and acknowledged that he should have communicated his preferences before the game to avoid any awkward situations.

The controversy has sparked discussions on social media, with some supporting Yakubboev’s right to practice his beliefs, while others criticize his actions as disrespectful. The tournament organizers have not yet commented on the incident, but it has certainly added an extra layer of intrigue to the competition.
