Exciting National Under-14 Rapid Chess Championship Set to Take Place in Guyana
The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) is gearing up for an exciting weekend as they prepare to host the ReadyMix Concrete-sponsored National Under-14 Rapid Chess Championship. The tournament, set to take place on Sunday, January 26 at the School of the Nations in Georgetown, is expected to draw over 60 young chess enthusiasts from various schools.
The competition, which will feature both an Open and Girls section, will be played in a Swiss format with a time control of 20 minutes plus five-second increments after the first move. With the recent surge in chess activities within schools, the GCF is anticipating an even larger turnout than last weekend’s National U-12 competition, which saw the largest participation ever.
Several strong contenders are expected to vie for the coveted U-14 Championship titles. In the Open competition, players like Nicholas Zhang, Alek Ubaldo-Singh, and reigning U-12 Champion Abel Fernandez will be looking to make their mark. Meanwhile, in the Girls section, reigning U-12 Girls Champion Kataleya Sam, Chelsea Harrison, and Rebha Lachman are among those competing for the title.
Notably, 2024 U-14 champions Sachin Pitamber and Aditi Joshi will not be competing as they have aged out of this particular tournament. The GCF extends its gratitude to ReadyMix Concrete for their support of youth chess in Guyana, as well as to the School of the Nations for providing their facilities for GCF activities.
Chess enthusiasts and supporters are encouraged to join the federation on their website and follow them on social media for updates on the tournament and other chess activities. With so much talent and excitement surrounding the event, the National Under-14 Rapid Chess Championship promises to be a thrilling competition for all involved.
