Susan Polgar criticizes Nodirbek Yakubboev for refusing to shake hands with Indian GM Vaishali at Tata Steel Chess tournament
Chess grandmaster Susan Polgar has sparked a debate in the chess community after criticizing Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Yakubboev for refusing to shake hands with Indian GM R Vaishali during the 2025 Tata Steel Chess tournament in the Netherlands. Yakubboev cited “religious reasons” for his decision, but Polgar challenged his stance by pointing out a previous instance where he shook hands with India’s Divya Deshmukh in 2023.
Polgar took to social media to question the inconsistency in Yakubboev’s actions, asking, “What is the difference?” She emphasized that while she understands and respects religious beliefs, Yakubboev could have informed tournament officials or the female players in advance about his decision to avoid handshakes.
The Hungarian-American chess grandmaster further explained her stance, stating that the Tata Steel Chess tournament is a prestigious invitational event where Yakubboev knew in advance that he would face female opponents. She suggested that if he wanted an exception to the handshake rule, he should have been proactive in communicating his preferences.
In response, Yakubboev addressed the issue on social media, expressing his respect for women and Indian chess players while reiterating his religious beliefs that prevent him from touching women. He apologized to Vaishali for any offense caused and clarified that he does not impose his beliefs on others.
Yakubboev also explained that while he considers his previous actions of shaking hands with female players as wrong for him personally, he does not dictate how others should behave. He recounted a situation where he was advised by arbiters to at least perform a Namaste gesture as a compromise in lieu of a handshake.
The incident has sparked a conversation about cultural and religious differences in the chess world, with opinions divided on whether players should adhere to traditional customs or adapt to more inclusive practices. As the debate continues, the chess community is left pondering the balance between respecting individual beliefs and maintaining a harmonious playing environment.
