Uzbek Grandmaster Nodirbek Yakubboev Apologizes to R Vaishali for Handshake Incident at Tata Steel Chess Tournament

Title: Uzbek Grandmaster Nodirbek Yakubboev Apologizes to Indian GM R Vaishali for Refusing Handshake, Offers Flowers and Chocolate

In a heartwarming turn of events at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk Aan Zee, Uzbek Grandmaster Nodirbek Yakubboev offered flowers, chocolate, and a personal apology to Indian GM R Vaishali after causing a stir by refusing to shake hands with her before their game. Yakubboev cited “religious reasons” for his actions, but later expressed regret for the awkward situation that arose.

The 23-year-old met Vaishali, accompanied by her brother GM R Praggnanandhaa and mother Nagalakshmi, on the sidelines of the tournament. In a video shared online by ‘ChessBase India’, Yakubboev can be seen apologizing to Vaishali, who graciously accepted his apology and reassured him that she did not take offense.

Yakubboev explained that he was in a hurry on the day of the incident and simply forgot to shake hands, emphasizing that he meant no disrespect. Despite his initial explanation of religious beliefs preventing him from touching other women, Yakubboev faced criticism when an old video of him shaking hands with another Indian player surfaced online.

In an effort to make amends, Yakubboev also met with the other player, Divya Deshmukh, offering flowers and chocolate as a gesture of regret. He reiterated his respect for Vaishali, Praggnanandhaa, and Deshmukh, expressing his best wishes for their future rounds in the tournament.

The meeting concluded with Yakubboev folding his hands in a ‘Namaste’ gesture, symbolizing respect and goodwill. The players parted ways on a positive note, showcasing sportsmanship and understanding in the face of a challenging situation.

The incident serves as a reminder of the diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs present in the world of chess, highlighting the importance of mutual respect and communication among players. Despite initial misunderstandings, Yakubboev’s apology and gestures of reconciliation demonstrate a commitment to fostering a harmonious and inclusive chess community.
