Gukesh Dommaraju Takes Sole Lead in Tata Steel Chess 2025 Masters Standings, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu Suffers Defeat

In a thrilling turn of events at the 2025 Tata Steel Chess Tournament, Indian prodigy Gukesh Dommaraju emerged as the sole leader in the Masters standings after a spectacular victory over compatriot Leon Luke Mendonca. The intense battle between the two young talents captivated chess enthusiasts worldwide as Gukesh showcased his strategic prowess to outmaneuver Mendonca in a 43-move game.

Mendonca, who had earned his spot in the Masters by winning the Challengers title last year, faced a tough challenge against the reigning World Chess Champion. Despite struggling with health issues throughout the tournament, Mendonca put up a valiant fight with the black pieces but ultimately succumbed to Gukesh’s relentless pressure.

Meanwhile, another Indian chess sensation, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, faced a tough loss against Dutch No. 1 Anish Giri in a gripping showdown. Giri, determined to maintain his winning streak, capitalized on Praggnanandhaa’s mistakes to secure a decisive victory.

In a morale-boosting result for Indian supporters, Arjun Erigaisi managed a commendable draw against defending Masters champion Wei Yi, while Pentala Harikrishna suffered a defeat against Vladimir Fedoseev. The Challengers section also saw intense battles, with an all-Indian clash between Divya Deshmukh and Vaishali Rameshbabu ending in a draw.

With Gukesh leading the Masters standings and Thai Dai van Nguyen dominating the Challengers section, the competition at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament continues to heat up. Chess enthusiasts eagerly await the next round of thrilling matchups as the young talents showcase their skills on the grand stage.
