Deadlock between Fide and Freestyle Chess Promoter Jan Buettner Continues: Further Talks Futile

The ongoing battle between Fide and Freestyle Chess (Fischer Random) promoters has reached a stalemate, with negotiations failing to reach a resolution. In a recent open letter to Fide, Freestyle Chess promoter Jan Buettner expressed frustration, stating that further talks with Fide are “futile.” On the other hand, Fide has accused Freestyle Chess of refusing to acknowledge its status as the sole regulator of the World Chess Championships.

The main point of contention between the two parties has been the title of the ‘World Championship.’ While Fide has asserted its authority as the sole body responsible for awarding World Championship titles, Freestyle Chess and its promoters, including world No.1 Magnus Carlsen, have been pushing for their tournament series to be recognized as a World Championship.

In response to the deadlock, Fide has decided to postpone the decision to award the title of “world champion” to the winner of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour for an additional 10 months. This decision aims to ensure that no player is forced into a difficult position and that the integrity of the game is maintained.

Despite previous agreements and negotiations, the talks have now fallen through, leaving both parties at an impasse. Buettner has accused Fide of seeking to exert control over all chess competitions and imposing its authority on players, creating division within the chess world.

As the deadlock continues, the future of Freestyle Chess and its status as a World Championship remains uncertain. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
