Young Man Diagnosed with Rare Brain Tumour After Eye Test During Lunch Break
Hugo Fairbanks Weston, a 25-year-old business agent and former actor who played a young Ed Sheeran in a music video, was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour after visiting Kite Opticians in Ipswich during his lunch break. What started as headaches and blurred vision quickly escalated into a severe migraine at work, prompting him to seek emergency eye tests.
Optometrist Adrian Kite made an unusual discovery of swelling in Mr Fairbanks Weston’s optic nerve, suspecting it could be caused by pressure from a brain tumour. A subsequent MRI scan confirmed the diagnosis, leading to surgery at Addenbrookes Hospital just 10 days after the optometrist appointment. Following 24 sessions of radiotherapy, Mr Fairbanks Weston received the all-clear within three months.
Reflecting on his experience, Mr Fairbanks Weston emphasized the importance of trusting one’s instincts and seeking medical attention promptly. He credited the timely diagnosis for potentially saving his sight and even his life. His girlfriend, Francesca, also played a crucial role as his caregiver during treatment.
Adrian Kite, a member of the Suffolk Local Optical Committee, described cases like Hugo’s as extremely rare and a once-in-a-career occurrence for an optometrist. The unique and life-changing experience has left a lasting impact on Mr Fairbanks Weston and his loved ones, highlighting the importance of proactive healthcare and early intervention in potentially life-threatening situations.
