Matthias Bluebaum Wins European Chess Championship for Second Time

German Grandmaster Matthias Bluebaum has made history by becoming the first player to win the European Chess Championship two times. Bluebaum previously won gold in 2022 and has now added another title to his name, making him the only German to achieve this feat in the event’s 25-year history.

In a thrilling finish, Bluebaum finished in a three-way tie on 8.5/11 with Grandmasters Frederik Svane and Maxim Rodshtein. However, Bluebaum emerged victorious thanks to his superior tiebreaks, securing his second European Chess Championship title.

Bluebaum’s countryman Svane finished in second place, while Rodshtein claimed the third spot on the podium. Both players showcased their skills by winning crucial games in the final round of the tournament. The top 20 players from the event will qualify for the 2025 FIDE World Cup, an important milestone in the world championship cycle.

The tournament, which featured 375 players representing 40 European countries, took place in Eforie Nord, Romania, from March 15 to 26. With a prize fund of €100,000 up for grabs, the competition was fierce as players vied for a chance to qualify for the upcoming FIDE World Cup and the 2026 Candidates Tournament.

Bluebaum’s path to victory was marked by solid play and strategic brilliance, as he remained undefeated throughout the tournament. His key victories, including a crucial win against Daniil Yuffa in round seven, propelled him to the top of the standings.

Despite facing tough competition, Bluebaum’s consistent performance and tactical acumen set him apart from the rest of the field. His victory in the European Chess Championship cements his status as one of the top players in the world.

As the chess world celebrates Bluebaum’s historic achievement, the focus now shifts to the upcoming European Women’s Championship 2025, set to begin on March 31 in Rhodes, Greece. With the excitement of top-level chess continuing to captivate audiences, fans can look forward to more thrilling competitions in the days to come.
