Meet Phil Shaw: The Island Chess Man

Meet Phil Shaw, also known as “the Island Chess Man,” a retired school teacher who has found a new passion in teaching the art of chess to others. From not knowing anything about the game to becoming a master and a teacher, Phil has dedicated his time to sharing his love for chess with anyone willing to learn.

You can often find Phil at the Starbucks on Padre Island, where he sets up his chess board and waits for opponents to challenge him. But it’s not just about winning for Phil, it’s about the connection and bond he forms with strangers over a shared passion for the game.

For just $10, parents can sign their kids up for a chess lesson with Mr. Shaw, who believes in the motto, “I never lose. I either win, or I learn.” And while he may win most of the time, Phil’s true joy comes from seeing kids enjoy and have fun playing chess.

So, if you’re looking to learn the game or just want to challenge a master, head over to the island Starbucks every Wednesday at 5 p.m. to meet Phil Shaw, the Island Chess Man. And remember, in the game of chess, it’s not always about winning, but about the lessons learned along the way.
