Tye Ruotolo: From Rising Star to Submission Grappling Champion – A Journey to Defend the Throne

ONE Championship’s Tye Ruotolo Defends Welterweight Submission Grappling World Championship Title Against Magomed Abdulkadirov

American Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) superstar Tye Ruotolo showcased his skills and determination as he competed for the inaugural ONE welterweight submission grappling world championship against Russian star Magomed Abdulkadirov in November 2023.

In a strategic move, Ruotolo opted to gauge Abdulkadirov’s strategy rather than employing his usual all-out attack style right from the start. This approach allowed him to refine his tactics as the match progressed into the later stages.

Both athletes displayed moments of excellence during the 10-minute matchup, but it was Ruotolo’s relentless pressure and pursuit of a finish that ultimately led to his victory. The 22-year-old emerged victorious, winning 26 pounds of welterweight submission grappling gold via unanimous decision.

Ruotolo continued his winning streak by defending his title against Australian standout Izaak Michell in April 2024, utilizing a hybrid submission maneuver called the ‘Ruotolo-tine’ to retain the gold. His next challenge will be against Canadian rival Dante Leon at ONE Fight Night 31 on May 2, where he will defend his title once again.

Fans can catch all the action live from Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, as Ruotolo looks to maintain his reign as the ONE welterweight submission grappling world champion. Don’t miss out on this exciting matchup between two talented athletes in the world of submission grappling.
