Nigerian Chess Champion Tunde Onakoya Reclaims Guinness World Record with 64-Hour Marathon in Times Square

Nigerian chess champion and child education advocate, Tunde Onakoya, has once again made history by reclaiming the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon. Onakoya completed a 64-hour non-stop chess session in Times Square, New York City, partnering with U.S. chess expert Shawn Martinez to surpass the previous record set by Norwegian players in 2024.

This monumental achievement, which took place on April 20, 2025, has drawn international attention and admiration. Onakoya had previously attempted the record in April 2024, playing for 60 hours but narrowly missing the title. Now, a year later, he not only reclaimed the title but set a new global standard for endurance and dedication.

Onakoya, the founder of Chess in Slums Africa, dedicated his achievement to dreamers and underprivileged children worldwide. In a statement on social media, he encouraged others to pursue their dreams and make a positive impact in the world.

The record-setting chess marathon was not just a display of mental and physical endurance but also a symbolic act of hope and advocacy. Onakoya used the opportunity to raise awareness and funds for children in underserved communities through his Chess in Slums initiative.

This remarkable feat showcases Onakoya’s commitment to both the game of chess and the betterment of society, inspiring others to dream big and make a difference.
