Midrand Chess Club Propels Township Talent to National and International Success

The Midrand Chess Club is making waves in the chess community as it strives to bridge the gap between township talent and competitive opportunities. With a mission to propel local players to success on national and international stages, the club is thrilled to announce that three of its outstanding players will be competing in the prestigious Moja Chess Extravaganza.

Taking place from April 26 to May 1, the Moja Chess Extravaganza is one of Africa’s most esteemed chess tournaments, highlighting the exceptional talent nurtured by the Midrand Chess Club. Coach Kgosimang Molefe believes that the advent of streaming has revolutionized the game of chess, turning it into an engaging and social experience that appeals to a wide audience.

“Streaming has injected life into chess, making it interactive and enjoyable for everyone,” said Molefe. He emphasized the growth of online platforms, innovative school programs, and active community outreach initiatives that have made chess accessible to countless individuals.

Despite the progress made, challenges remain, particularly in under-resourced areas. Molefe identified barriers such as registration fees, equipment costs, and travel expenses for tournaments that players often face. He stressed the importance of support from sponsors, local federations, and partnerships with schools and NGOs to create a more inclusive chess community.

In addition to cultivating chess skills, Molefe aims to foster critical thinking, discipline, and self-confidence in all players. He is determined to establish more community-based chess programs, especially for children who lack access to traditional training.

The South African Open Championships, hosted at the University of Johannesburg, present another opportunity for players to showcase their skills. Molefe encouraged more players to participate in this event and called upon sponsors to increase their support.
