Celebrating the Success of the Inaugural North Fork Chess Tournament at Mattituck Jr.-Sr. High School
The North Fork community came together to celebrate the inaugural interscholastic North Fork Chess Tournament, hosted by Mattituck Jr.-Sr. High School. The event, which drew competitors from Mattituck, Riverhead, and Southold high schools, showcased the strategic brilliance and friendly rivalry among students.
Under the guidance of chess adviser John Albers and with assistance from Chris Strohsnitter, 24 students engaged in intense matches, with Riverhead High School securing the top three positions. Despite the competitive nature of the tournament, the emphasis remained on sportsmanship and the shared love of chess.
Students flocked to watch the tournament during their free periods, with some even joining in for casual games. Mattituck’s own James Felakos delivered a commendable performance, reaching the final four.
The successful tournament has laid the foundation for future chess competitions, fostering intellectual growth and camaraderie among the participating schools. Mattituck High School looks forward to hosting more tournaments in the future, thanks to the support of the community and sponsors like NoFo Wellness Center.
