Innovative Chess-Themed Watches by Von Doren: The Reti Collection
Chess-themed watchmaker, Oyvind Von Doren Asbjornsen, is set to release a new mechanical chronometer version of his popular Reti collection this fall. The Reti collection, named after chess master Richard Reti, features notations from a famous 1910 match on the dial instead of traditional hour markers.
The limited edition quartz watches in brushed steel quickly sold out in 2019, prompting the release of a new 42-millimeter mechanical chronometer version with a Swiss-made ETA movement. Priced at around 1,500 euros ($1,614), the new Reti watch will allow wearers to replay the historic game by referencing the engraved moves on the case back.
In addition to the chess-inspired design, the new Reti watch will also feature a surprise design element that Asbjornsen is keeping under wraps for now. As a filmmaker and television producer with a love for chess, Asbjornsen’s attention to detail and passion for the game have been evident in his watch designs.
The Reti collection was originally created as the official watch of Norway Chess, an annual tournament where Von Doren has been the official timekeeper since 2017. With the success of the limited edition Reti watches, it’s clear that Asbjornsen’s unique approach to watchmaking has resonated with both chess enthusiasts and watch collectors alike.
Steve Huyton, author of “Independent Watchmakers,” praised Asbjornsen’s decision to release the limited edition Reti watches, noting that the subtle integration of chess symbols on the dial while maintaining a traditional aesthetic was key to the watch’s success. With the upcoming release of the mechanical chronometer version, it seems that Von Doren watches are set to make a lasting impression on the world of horology.
