West Orange High School Junior Wins 2024 US Amateur Individual Championship

West Orange High School junior Andrew Chan has made his mark in the world of chess, taking first place at the 2024 US Amateur Individual, 78th Annual US Amateur East Championship over the Memorial Day weekend. Chan’s impressive performance included five wins and one draw out of six games, leading him to victory.

Chan’s standout performance included wins over notable opponents such as the eventual senior champion and chess coach, Andy Dong, as well as former Amateur Individual Champion, Shaun Smith. His success in the tournament was solidified with a draw against third place finisher Samuel Cheng.

In addition to his recent championship win, Chan has also achieved success in other chess competitions, including tying for 3rd-8th place at the National High School Championship in Baltimore. He has also been instrumental in coaching and supporting his high school’s Varsity and Junior Varsity teams, helping them secure fourth place finishes at the New Jersey State High School championship.

Aside from his accomplishments in chess, Chan is actively involved in various activities at West Orange High School, including marching band, indoor percussion, chamber orchestra, math team, and the golf team.

With the growing interest in chess, the West Orange Public Library will be hosting a non-rated chess tournament for beginners in grades K-8 on June 15, organized by the West Orange Chess Club. Additionally, chess classes will be offered during the Summer Enrichment Program for the first time, with registration filling up quickly.
