Divya Deshmukh Emerges Victorious at World Junior Chess Championship 2024 in Gandhinagar

Gandhinagar, Gujarat: In a thrilling display of skill and determination, Divya Deshmukh clinched the title of World Junior Chess Championship 2024 in the U-20 category. The young chess prodigy defeated Bulgarian Beloslava Krasteva in the championship round, showcasing her exceptional talent on the board.

With both Divya and Krasteva being among the top 20 junior girls as per FIDE ratings, the competition was intense. Out of the 101 players from 27 countries participating in the tournament, these two talented players stood out with their strategic moves and tactical gameplay.

Divya’s flawless performance in the final five rounds of the open and girls’ categories solidified her position as the clear favorite with 5.5 points. Her unbeaten streak throughout the competition earned her the well-deserved title of World Junior girl’s chess champion.

Expressing her joy and gratitude after the win, Divya shared, “I am very happy, the tournament was well organized and hence was a bit easier for me. It was tough, a few players were so good that their ratings didn’t match how good the players they are… My family has been with me through thick and thin…I have no plans for the future as of now. I want to be GM (grandmaster) as soon as possible.”

The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, also extended his congratulations to the winners of the championship. He commended the players for their dedication and sportsmanship, emphasizing the importance of representing one’s country on the global stage.

In the girls’ section, Mariam Mkrtchyan secured the runner-up position, closely following Divya’s outstanding performance. Ayan Allahverdiyeva from Azerbaijan claimed the third spot, showcasing the diverse talent pool in the competition.

Divya’s victory not only highlights her exceptional skills as a chess player but also serves as an inspiration to aspiring young talents in the field. Her determination and passion for the game have propelled her to new heights, setting a benchmark for excellence in the world of chess.
