After a year of uncertainty, Google’s massive Downtown West project in San Jose is showing signs of progress, much to the relief of local businesses and residents eagerly awaiting the development.

Last year, there were concerns about the future of Google’s plan to develop 80 acres of new office buildings, housing units, and retail space around Diridon Station. However, recent developments indicate that the project may be back on track.

In September, a Google official met with residents to discuss the project, and in February, demolition work resumed in the project area. Additionally, in early June, the company hinted at the possibility of including an affordable housing project on the site, further fueling speculation that Downtown West will move forward.

For downtown businesses, the potential influx of thousands of new workers and residents is a welcome prospect. Eric Johnson, the owner of Recycle Bookstore’s downtown location, believes that the increased population density will benefit local businesses by attracting more customers to the area.

Similarly, many downtown residents are excited about the prospect of new businesses opening in the area. Sophia Copeland, a teenager living near downtown, hopes that more local shops and activities will enhance the offerings for students and teens in the area.

While Google has not provided any new updates on the development, plans for Downtown West include 7.3 million square feet of offices, 500,000 square feet of retail space, and 4,000 residential units, with 25% dedicated to affordable housing. The project also includes the creation of 15 acres of public parks and easy access to public transportation at Diridon Station.

Despite facing hurdles and delays, Google has committed to contributing millions of dollars to homeless services, job opportunities, and rent assistance in the community. However, community activists are closely monitoring how these funds will be distributed and when the rest of the promised contributions will arrive.

As the project moves forward, residents and businesses are hopeful that Google’s Downtown West will bring new opportunities and vitality to downtown San Jose.
