Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority Introduces Slab System Tariff to Curb Wastage

The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) has implemented a new slab system of tariff for electricity and water consumption in an effort to reduce wastage and encourage conservation. The new system, which came into effect on April 1, 2008, will see consumers being charged different rates based on their usage levels.

Under the new system, residential and commercial units using up to 2,000 kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity per month will be charged at the old rate of 20 fils per unit. However, those using between 2,000kWh and 4,000kWh per month will be charged 24 fils per unit, and consumption of 4,000-6,000kWh will cost 28 fils per unit. Industrial units will also see changes in their rates based on their consumption levels.

For water consumption, different rates will apply based on the amount of water used. Housing units consuming up to 6,000 gallons will be charged 3 fils per gallon, with rates increasing for higher consumption levels. Commercial and industrial units will also see changes in their water rates based on their usage levels.

Sewa Director-General Al Waleed bin Khadim stated that the revised rates are aimed at deterring overconsumption and preserving natural resources in the emirate. The new system is designed to encourage major consumers to conserve water and power, while not affecting those using electricity and water reasonably.

The introduction of the slab system is a step towards promoting sustainability and responsible consumption of resources in Sharjah. Consumers are encouraged to be mindful of their usage levels to help protect the environment and ensure the efficient use of water and electricity.
