AICF Considering Hosting World Chess Championship in India with 17-Year-Old Grandmaster Gukesh as Challenger

The All India Chess Federation (AICF) is considering the possibility of hosting the World Chess Championship in India, with 17-year-old chess Grandmaster D. Gukesh qualifying to challenge world champion China’s GM Ding Liren. AICF President Nitin Narang announced that the federation will provide a generous financial reward to Gukesh in recognition of his recent success.

Gukesh made history by becoming the youngest player to win the FIDE Candidates tournament in Toronto, Canada, scoring nine points in 14 rounds. He emerged as the challenger for the world chess title, half a point ahead of other players.

“We are assessing the situation. There will be more clarity on the subject in a couple of days. Once we understand what is needed to host the event, then we will decide,” Narang stated. He emphasized the importance of sponsors and government support for hosting the world title event.

Former women’s world champion and Grandmaster Susan Polgar expressed her belief that Gukesh would be the slight favorite against Ding Liren. She highlighted the champion’s inactivity and form not being at its peak.

Narang mentioned that Gukesh’s achievement will have a significant impact on Indian chess. India has successfully hosted the World Chess Championship and the Chess Olympiad in the past, showcasing its capability to organize prestigious events.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) plans to hold the world chess championship this year, with the dates and venue yet to be decided. The World Championship Match consists of 14 games, and the player who scores 7.5 points or more wins the match.

The AICF had provided financial assistance to Indian players who competed in the recent Candidates Tournament. With Gukesh being the sole Indian player to succeed in the tournament, the question remains whether he will receive a substantial reward from the federation.
